From
the Commandant:
Thank You to Parents: I’d like to personally thank
the parents and staff members who have volunteered their time on the weekends
to chaperone our cadets during their weekend skiing and skating trips at West
Point ski slopes and Bear Mountain Skate Park. In addition to these events
parents have also come in to help out with the bowling trips in town, “Lounge
Nights” at Donaldson Lodge and during the campus movie nights in the
auditorium. Your sacrifice of your
valuable time on the weekends has been greatly appreciated by my staff and our
cadets and has enabled our cadets to have fun and event filled weekends. Please continue to contact Mike and
Cassandra Regan with the Parents’ Auxiliary to offer your assistance when you
have the time.

Volunteering Up Amid Tough
Economic Times: Americans have answered President Obama's call to service, according to
the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which reported a significant increase in
the number of volunteers and the volunteer rate in 2009. Check out this release
for more information. http://www.nationalservice.gov/about/newsroom/releases_detail.asp

College, Competitions
& Scholarships
Summer 2010 Institute on
Philanthropy and Voluntary Service Internship Program
Scholarship
applications are now being accepted for the Summer 2010 Institute on
Philanthropy and Voluntary Service. Sponsored by The Fund for American Studies
in partnership with Georgetown University, the Institute is a summer academic
internship program held in Washington, D.C. for undergraduate students
interested in volunteerism and careers in the nonprofit sector. The
Institute combines substantive professional experience for 30 hours a week with
a challenging academic experience. This fast-paced, eight-week residential
program provides students from around the world with the opportunity to gain an
edge in today's competitive job market and graduate school admissions, and experience
the excitement of Washington first-hand. The Institute will be held June 6 -
July 31, 2010. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis
until March 5, 2010. Students who complete their application by the priority
deadline of February 5, 2010 will receive priority internship placement and
scholarship consideration. For more information or to start an online
application, please visit the website at http://www.dcinternships.org/IPVS/about/index.asp
Starting your FAFSA for
College Financial Aid: Now that it is past 1 January, you can begin the FAFSA. It has sections for the student and the
parents or guardians, therefore it is important to do this together.
Scholarships: It may not be too late to apply to some
independent scholarships. Please visit www.fastweb.com or www.cappex.com for more information. With the rising cost of a college education,
no one can leave a stone unturned for “free money.”
College
Applications: Still got some applications in the hopper? Well, it is time to get moving. Competition for places and financial aid at
schools has sharply increased.
